Tempeh Bacon (Gluten-Free, Lectin-Free)

Tempeh Bacon - This tasty tempeh bacon is a grain-free, gluten-free and lectin-free option developed around my favorite tempeh bacon recipe. There's no soy sauce or tamari in this, which is how it's considered lectin-free.

Yes, I’m a vegetarian. But I’m also human and I miss bacon sometimes. Luckily, I’m perfectly happy with a couple facon bacon recipes I’ve found on the internet! When I started my lectin-free diet, I decided I needed to quickly come up with a recipe for tempeh bacon that fit so I wouldn’t miss out on that familiar taste.

I based this recipe on my favorite tempeh bacon recipe, which is from¬†kblog.lunchboxbunch.com. I love to use Tempeh Tantrum, which is a local brand that I buy from Lakewinds Co-Op. It’s super fresh and doesn’t contain grains like a lot of the ones from bigger retailers.

You can eat this easy, quick tempeh bacon as a side to your sweet potato hash, or on a vegan BLT for lunch or dinner! It’s excellent for both. It won’t taste exactly like the tempeh bacon you might be used to because the tamari and maple syrup are missing, but this does the job for me since I know I’ll feel better for skipping those ingredients. If you want a classic tempeh bacon, I highly recommend the link above for the original recipe!

Use this tempeh bacon recipe in a vegan BLT, or alongside your favorite sweet potato hash! It's a great option for those on a lectin-free diet.
Recipe type: Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner
Cuisine: Vegan | Gluten-Free | Grain-Free | Lectin-Free
Serves: 2-4 servings
  • 8 oz. grain-free tempeh, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp. coconut aminos
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. rice wine vinegar
  • ¼ tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp. ground black pepper
  • 5 drops liquid stevia (Sweet Drops)*
  • ¼ tsp liquid smoke*
  • Pinch cayenne, optional
  • 2 tbsp. coconut oil
  1. Whisk all ingredients, except tempeh and coconut oil, in a shallow dish.
  2. Add tempeh slices and flip to coat. Allow to marinate 5 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare a pan by heating to medium-high and adding 1 tbsp. coconut oil.
  4. After 5 minutes of marinating, turn the heat down to medium and add the tempeh slices. Make sure not to crowd the pan, you can do it in a few batches, if necessary.
  5. Cook for 2-4 minutes, flipping occasionally, to brown on both sides. These can burn quickly, so don't walk away!
  6. Add coconut oil to the pan if needed. If there's extra marinade in the pan, turn the heat to medium-low toward the end of the cook time and spoon the extra marinade on top of the slices while they cook. Be careful as the liquid may splatter and it will be hot!
*You can substitute ½ tsp. maple syrup if you're not on the Plant Paradox diet.
**Mine is Hickory flavor.

Looking for those other stellar vegan bacon recipes on the internet? They’re not lectin-free, but could maybe be made so with a few changes. They’re delicious and I can’t get enough! Both are excellent on salads and on top of roasted veggies and they help my husband eat a lot more vegetables.

    1. Hi Libby! Thanks so much for your question. It seems that grain-free tempeh is harder to find than I realized. If you’re local to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, Tempeh Tantrum is my go-to grain-free tempeh brand. I also found one brand from Maine that ships to the New England area, which is called Lalibela Farm. It looks like Tofurky’s Original Soy Cake is also grain-free and they have a product locator on their site. Let me know if you have any other questions. Happy to help!
