I have always been very curious about learning how to make things from scratch. As a teenager, this was much to my mother’s chagrin. She wasn’t too fond of buying random ingredients for one recipe or another, but one time I convinced her to let me try making jam from scratch.

Don’t get me wrong—it tasted amazing. But it was SO labor intensive. I stood by the stove, stirring constantly, for what seemed. like. days. It called for pectin, and an insane amount of sugar. Needless to say I haven’t made that recipe again. Continue reading

As a kid, ketchup was always my condiment of choice. Nothing else would do. You would not find mustard, relish, or barbecue sauce anywhere near my food.

I didn’t start to crave spicy things until I did a master cleanse while attempting to identify what was going wrong with my body. I became obsessed with cayenne pepper, and hot sauce was my new vice.

More recently I’ve attempted to make a healthier (less salt and sugar) version of the two. I came up with this spicy, sweet, roasted tomato jam, which I love to spoon onto toast or these waffles and top it with an over-easy egg.
